Frequently asked questions
It is completely normal to have questions before starting hypnotherapy, especially if you feel anxious, sceptical, or unsure what to expect.
Here are some of the questions people often ask before booking.

Not sure where to start?
You do not need to understand Solution Focused Hypnotherapy before you get in touch.
A free intro call gives you space to ask questions first and decide whether it feels right for you.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be helpful if anxiety, stress, overthinking, poor sleep, tension or low confidence are affecting your day-to-day life.Combining practical conversation with guided relaxation, it helps you understand how your brain responds to stress, and supports you in building calmer, more helpful patterns. If you are unsure whether it is suitable for you, you are welcome to book a free intro call or get in touch and ask.
Yes. I work with teens and adults in Chippenham and online. For younger clients, sessions are always handled carefully, ethically and appropriately, with clear communication around consent, privacy and safeguarding. If you are a parent or carer wondering whether hypnotherapy may be suitable for a teenager, you are welcome to get in touch and ask.
When your brain and body have been under stress for a long time, they can become very good at repeating protective patterns. That might mean overthinking, avoiding things, reacting more quickly, struggling to sleep, feeling tense, or expecting something to go wrong. These patterns are not a sign that you are broken. They are often signs that your brain has been trying to protect you.Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you understand these patterns and begin practising calmer, more helpful responses.
The free intro call is a short, no-pressure conversation where you can ask questions, briefly explain what you are looking for support with, and see whether hypnotherapy feels like the right next step for you.The initial consultation is your first full appointment. This is where we talk in more detail about what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what has started to feel difficult, and how you would like everyday life to feel instead.I will also explain how our brain responds to stress and anxiety, so the way you have been feeling starts to make more sense.
No. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is forward-focused, but that does not mean you are restricted in what you can talk about. We can talk about anything you need or want to discuss, but the focus is on where you are now, what you would like to be different, and how you can begin moving towards that.We cannot change what has already happened, and we cannot always control everything happening around us now. But we can influence how we respond, how we recover, and the next steps we take. Many clients find this empowering.
Most people describe hypnosis as a calm, relaxed and focused state, similar to daydreaming or becoming absorbed in a book, film or journey. Many of us experience similar states naturally during everyday life, such as when we are walking, exercising, cooking, watching TV, or driving a familiar route. You remain awake, aware and in control throughout. It is not mind control and it is not stage hypnosis.
The initial consultation is a chance to talk about what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what has started to feel difficult, and how you would like everyday life to feel instead. We complete a health background and fact-finding questionnaire together, and then look together at how our brain responds to stress, anxiety and overwhelm, and how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works. Many people find this reassuring because things can start to make more sense. You will also receive a relaxation MP3 to support your work between sessions.
This varies depending on the person and their reason for coming. Some people notice changes quickly, while others benefit from more time and consistency.Progress is not always a straight line, but small changes can be important signs that something is shifting. We will discuss this during your initial consultation.
Yes. I work with clients in person in Chippenham, at Wadswick Green Wellness Spa near Corsham, and online. For online sessions, you will need a quiet, private space where you can talk freely and relax without interruption, a comfortable chair or sofa, and a reasonably good internet connection. Some people feel more relaxed in their own home or office, while others prefer to come in person. We can discuss what feels right for you.
That is completely understandable. Many people are unsure what hypnotherapy involves before they start, and I was sceptical myself before experiencing Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. My approach is practical, grounded and neuroscience-informed. It is focused on helping you understand what is happening in your brain and body, rather than asking you to simply “believe” in hypnotherapy. For many people, that understanding is the first reassuring step: the way they feel starts to make sense, and change begins to feel possible.
No. You remain awake, aware and in control throughout.Hypnosis in a clinical setting is not stage hypnosis and it is not mind control. Most people describe it as a calm, relaxed and focused state. You may feel deeply relaxed, drift in and out, or hear every word. You remain able to respond if needed, and the suggestions used in sessions are aligned with your wishes, goals and values. The aim is to support calm, focus and helpful change.
No. Many clients come because they do not feel like themselves, are struggling to switch off, or feel stress building in their thoughts, sleep or body. You do not need a formal diagnosis to ask for support.
